Active in the DJ scene since 2002, Carlos René, once DJ Topcat, popularized ska, rocksteady, and early reggae in Mexico with his duo, Hot-Shot Sound System. He was among the first DJs in Mexico City to spin only 45 rpm records, and in 2004, he co-founded the Rocket Sound System.

Carlos René broadened his musical palette, incorporating genres like soul, garage rock, mod jazz, and '60s funk. He established a monthly club night, Hipshakers!, in 2008. Later, in 2015, he launched a tropical night, Bombo y Maracas. Using this platform, he delved deeper into his Latin heritage, spinning a variety of genres such as cumbia, salsa, porro, boogaloo, descarga, and more tropical rhythms.

During the years 2015 to 2018, Carlos René curated musical experiences at Dedos Sucios record shop in Mexico City, and recently in 2022, he has put his expertise into the co-founding of Casa Calypso Record Shop. Carlos René's recent work involves reviving forgotten Mexican and Latin music from the 20th century, which he showcases via his NTS show and multiple YouTube channels.

Carlos René, known for his unique musical range, and dedication to sharing diverse global sounds, has become a favorite DJ at clubs, festivals, and events across Canada, Colombia, Cuba, England, France, Germany, Indonesia, Italy, the Netherlands, Peru, Singapore, Spain, and the USA.
